Our Story: SPA

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month is coming to a close in 2 days.

I was approached by a local awareness organization about possibly telling my story and ties to the cause, I would be lying if I said that I wasn't hesitant, scared, and just plain unsure at this request. I went back and forth but ultimately decided that I have nothing to lose, only possible people to help. I didn't choose to write this for sympathy or credit, I chose to write it because it felt right in my heart.  I also decided that I wanted to share my writing with my people before the world.

This month always weighs particularly heavy on my heart and on my mind. I try to take it with stride and use my energy to spread what I have found to be somewhat of a passion, awareness and education. When I lost my Mom over four years ago I immediately went into a mode where I was defensive about my story, I was embarrassed of what had occurred, and I didn't particularly want people to know all of the details.

Looking back on my story and where I am currently I have such a different perspective. Instead of being aggressive I am protective, instead of being embarrassed I am proud, and if I can continue to tell my story and the details to help only one single person you bet I will. I've quickly learned that everyone has a story, some are typical and some are well not so typical.  Some stories are a little smoother than others and while mine might have had a slight detour it is who I am and I've gotten to a point where I am damn proud of that.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous to post this as it is about as intimate and personal as it gets but I think it shows a tremendous reality that many are unaware of, sometimes the people that you least expect are struggling and you don't always know what is going on at home.
 _______

So here it is.

My Mom was addicted to pain pills, since I was around 3 years old. She was in a severe car accident and prescribed painkillers to ease the back pain that was an after effect. I could go on for hours about how many addictions could be prevented but prescription happy doctors exist so we will save that for another day. The pills took over her life, slowly but surely her day to day interactions started to revolve around them.

I don't really remember my Mom not on pills, as sad as that makes me and as hard as it is to say it is the truth. Obviously I had interactions with her completely sober but I never got the see the "Nancy" that my Dad, her friends, and my family talk about. I want to make it clear that in no way shape or form mean that my Mom wasn't a good parent, she was the most amazing/rock star/kick ass person out there. She did a hell of a job raising me. She taught me right from wrong, punished me, yelled at me, and loved me harder than anyone I know. I hope one day to be half of the mother that she was.

The addiction was somewhat of the unspoken topic in my family.  Everyone knew about it and acknowledged it in on their own but no one really wanted to talk about it or put it on the table, herself included. The older I got the more aware I was about her situation, what was going on, and the more resentful I became, especially towards the denial but I was in denial myself at time

I'll never forget May 19, 2012,  it was my senior prom. Thinking back she hugged me long and hard, I remember noticing that but not thinking anything of it as I was in a rush. Being the typical 17 year old that I was I went to prom and ended up going to a friends lake house afterwards. I tried to call her that evening but my phone had been disconnected. I ended up returning home the next day with my boyfriend at the time, he dropped me off and headed on his way. I tried to unlock the door as usual but couldn't get inside, our deadbolt was locked. Long story short my neighbor eventually came out and said she hadn't heard anything all weekend. I remember her saying we needed to call 911 to get them to take the door down and I thought she was crazy.

It is somewhat of a blur but someone ended up going through a window to unlock our front door. My sweet neighbor knew my Mom was struggling and wouldn't let me go inside. My world changed in that very moment, they found her in bed after she had overdosed on over 100 pills of Norco, a lethal dose of hydrocodone and acetaminophen. She was not conscious but she was alive, as she wasn't expecting me to return for another day. The emotions were unreal, the denial was out of control, and I remember feeling numb thinking that this doesn't happen to people like us when the reality is that this happens to people just like anyone else in this world and people you would never expect.

My Dad got on a flight home as soon as he possibly could, her sister happened to be on a flight coming to Richmond anyways, her 5 brothers mainly local . My family arrived and we rallied, it showed me what family means, everything.

I remember getting to the emergency room and being put in a private waiting room, that was when it clicked with me that the situation at hand was not good. I got to see her and speak with her on the second day, with breathing tubes and assistance she was conscious. I recall telling her to blink if she could hear us, understand us, and know that it was okay.  She could and she did, this was the last time we got to interact and I could relive it like it was yesterday.

She spent 5 more days in the hospital, going from a local hospital to VCU's Critical Care Unit. As time went on we hoped that improvement would surface but her condition worsened, the toxins from the amount of acetaminophen she took started to build up in her system and overtook her organs. We decided as a family that not proceeding with any surgeries and taking her off of life support was the best decision and what she would have wanted.

We set a time for everyone to say their goodbyes. I'll never forget going to the hospital and getting off the elevator to be overwhelmed with my amazing friends, my family, all the way to nuns and teachers from my school. Everyone said their goodbyes and it was one of the most overwhelming/moving/and emotional days I will ever experience in my life. My friends were beyond amazing, taking me to the hospital at the drop of a hat anytime I wanted. My family went above and beyond,  the support system was truly unreal. But let me tell you, you need that. You need it the days after and you need it the months after. That isn't suicide or addiction that is grief in general.

We held her funeral a few days later and the turnout was amazing, truly humbling. I honestly think it was a good lesson for a lot of the people that attended (the majority of my all girls teenage high school). Drugs are sadly readily available on the streets especially prescription pills, all it takes is one time. I think it raised awareness that things like this happen to people you know, those that you think have it together, and that you can make a difference.

Writing this years later, nervous as can be about sharing I've learned a lot. A lot about myself, a lot about addictions, a lot about suicide, and a ton about the stigma that surrounds both. The stigma that stings those that have been left behind, and the outlook on those who struggle daily with addiction. Sadly suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in America, we lose over 42,000 Moms/Dads/Brothers/Sisters each and every year to this, that is 5,000+ more deaths than what occurred from traffic accidents.  Whether they have a substance abuse problem or not, that number is way too high. If I can share our story and help ONE single individual realize that they are not alone I have done my part.

My story has changed my outlook and the way I look at those who are struggling . Instead of being judgemental I'm empathetic but I'm also hopeful. Mental illness, addiction, substance abuse, and suicide are all topics to be handled with care but they need to be handled. A lot of people forget that those people struggling are people too, just like you or I. If we don't bring these problems to the forefront and educate each other change will never happen. Be the change; talk about it, don't be afraid, you too can make an impact big or small. Reach out to those that you think need help, look for red flags, and don't be afraid to talk about it.

As September comes to a close it reminds me that we continue to miss my Mom every single day, I long to hear her voice and her contagious laugh. While she wasn't there when I graduated from high school or college, nor will she be there when I get married or have kids I know that she is along for the ride and for that I am forever thankful.Thankful to have known someone as amazing as her and thankful that I've know been handed an opportunity to help others.

dog days of summer

This week has been one of those weeks that was just really really good.

I've officially been at Capital One for a solid week and I don't think that I could be any happier at this point. While it has only been one week I've learned that sometimes you just know when things are a good fit, especially when you have experienced what a bad fit was.

I've started to settle in nicely and I honestly found that I love the culture and just really enjoy the people, they're great and I'm very fortunate. Did I mention that I can wear jeans everyday?? I still can't get over it and I think they find it funny that I find it so odd.

The "campus" as they refer to it as is actually gorgeous and around twice the size of Longwood. I think that it actually reminds me a lot of a college campus; they have bikes everywhere (struggle for me) and everyone has a backpack since there is constant back and forth. Like I said, just a really good fit and I couldn't be happier.

{always} wear white after labor day

I'm never going to be a regular at Kroger again, the food is oddly fabulous. The coffee addict in me might also know where all the Starbucks locations are.

This weekend was pretty low key, the first in awhile that I didn't have plans to be driving to go somewhere or coming home from somewhere else and it was pretty perfect.

I spent Friday night with my old work people at the VMFA and for a few drinks afterwards.

Aaron & Katie.

Words cannot describe how much I miss these two and seeing their faces on a daily basis. There are some people in this world that just get you, you mesh, and it doesn't matter if you are going to dinner or sitting on your couch to have fun...that is these two. The fact that I continue to see them after moving onto a different position makes my heart so happy. I tell them that they used to be my work friends but now they'll just have to be my real friends.

My favorite Mama to be came to RVA from Charlottesville this weekend!! Last minute trips are my favorite and my favorite people are the ones that you can pick right up where you left off. We started Saturday off with brunch at Millie's which is actually on the best brunch places in Virginia. They had excellent breakfast and even better mimosas, it will definitely be added to the regular brunch rotation. We spent the rest of the day picking up odds and ends for Baby Washington!

Lauren was my driving factor when joining Sigma Kappa, I love her so and she made a huge impact on my college experience. It has been so fun to have a friend and be on the journey together, from graduation, to being in her wedding, to getting ready to welcome baby girl Quinn.

I cannot wait to meet your precious baby girl, January (aka December) cannot come soon enough!! I always love your visits and you.

Today just happens to be my G-Bae's 21st birthday, our last one to finally become legal. I love you more than words can describe and wish I could be there but we all know I'm too old to keep with with the two of you!! I hope that this weekend was amazing and everything that you ever wanted, now go find my GG!

Last but certainly not least, the weather is finally starting to cool down around here and it was about time. I'm a summer girl, 100% but I was getting tired of these 90 degree days. I packed away some sorts and tank tops the other day and I'm ready to welcome October with open arms.

Cheers to Monday!

Back to Reality

I have been off of work for the past two weeks and boy did I not realize how much I love having a schedule.

I thought about heading home to see my Dad for the week but some training for work got in the way and I wasn't able to go anywhere. It has been amazing to do things that I haven't had time to do these past few months like actually go to the gym, leisurely run errands, etc but it has it gotten boring.

I'm ready to head back to the real world tomorrow and begin my journey with Capital One.

_______

My sunflowers from last week held up remarkably well this past week, I ended up tossing them today actually. I saw some pictures from people that I went to Lickinghole yesterday and all of the flowers looked dead/wilted from it being so hot recently, glad we decided to go last weekend!

As I've had the past two weeks full of free time I tried to get back into a habit of heading to the gym each day. I didn't make it one morning but decided to Libby Hill one evening after dinner as they have some killer stairs that will challenge the stair master any day.

Not so bad when you have a view like this when you're done.

Get in your car and go to Total Wine or Trader Joes ASAP if you happen to enjoy an adult beverage, specifically anything pumpkin.

Ace's Pumpkin Cider is just as amazing as it sounds.

I've never cared about getting the newest iPhone as soon as it launched nor did I ever think I would be the crazy person in line outside of a Verizon store. Well, I was.

I was also the idiot that purchased the smallest phone they made last upgrade so for the past 2 years I have been getting "storage full" notifications every 6 hours of my life.

So on Friday at 3:45 I headed to the Verizon store like a bunch of other insane people in Richmond and sat outside for 4 hours waiting for them to open. It actually was not nearly as bad as I had expected and I actually made friends in line, their Mom brought everyone Chick-fil-A for breakfast.

Glad I did it but I don't plan on doing it again & might have brought a folding chair. No shame.

I headed to Farmville on Friday as this will probably be one of the last times I'll be able to visit for a while as I'll be traveling for work. I stayed with Truluck who as always is my favorite and the most amazing person out there. I know that I say this all the time but I miss living with her SO much, there is literally nothing like it and I miss it so very much.

I miss these girls, more than I ever expected or thought was possible. It was fun to just hang out like old times, drive around with no where to go, and laugh until our stomachs hurt. I also learned that I am not in college anymore and I cannot hang.

I love you too Deborah.

We headed over to Briery Creek on Saturday afternoon, I always forget how gorgeous this place is. I feel like every little town has a hidden gem somewhere and I would have to say that this is Farmville's. They'll also give you a ticket for just about anything there.

 Brunch.

Oh how much I love you. Some people don't appreciate you the way you deserve. Thanks for always being by brunch partner Nat!

I came home to a card sitting on my bed much to my surprise. I haven't really changed my address since I moved and just pick up my mail from my Grandpa's each week. It just reminded me that I have so many amazing the people in my life. Mama Crowe aka Truluck's amazing Momma had sent me a card with electricity and "cocktail" money.

Exactly why I adore them.

Cheers to Monday & starting a new journey at a new job!

New Season, New Job

I've quickly learned that there is somewhat of a mold that you are expected to follow in this world.

You are expected to go to college, balance 19,000 things over a four year period, graduate with a ton of accomplishments, and then go out into a big scary reality (that no one tells you about) and get a job. This is what the majority of my friends did and I did the exact same.

I started my job right after I returned from Ireland and I would be lying if I said that it wasn't a rough transition. Going from taking one class my last semester to having to follow a routine and spend 8+ hours in one place each day was huge. Not life changing but took some adjustment for sure. I finally settled in nicely and starting enjoying my job; I was working with Verizon  positions all across the country and I was finally getting into a grove.

I have found that I like things to go smoothly in this world and I'm not the biggest fan of changes, well I've also learned that isn't reality or the way things work.

I had applied to TONS of jobs earlier in the year just like every other senior that was about to walk across that stage. I felt like using my resume as wallpaper.

I ended up getting a call sometime during last week of August inquiring about a position with Capital One that I had applied for. I had honestly written it off and hadn't thought about it in weeks but I knew it was way too good of an opportunity with an amazing company to pass up. So, long story short I joined the Capital One team and I couldn't be happier! The people are amazing and their campus is literally stunning, they have bikes...working on that. I'll be working in Human Resources with recruiting and training out in West Creek, it will be so nice to finally put my degree to use.

While I'll miss my work peeps more than they know, they will just be my real friends and not my work friends now! I've more than enjoyed the past week off, getting things done around here that you oddly enough never have time for when you have a job.

So here is to new chapters, new opportunities, and not having to be at work until 9 o'clock!

New Ride

Goodbye Hyundais & hatchbacks, we have had some amazing times together.

But.

I'm happy to say I am the new owner of a 2017 Honda Civic, she is currently looking for a name & open for suggestions!

Lickinghole Creek

Everyone has been posting pictures with sunflowers around here for the past two weeks.

We finally had a little bit of a break from the 90+ degree temperatures that we are quickly getting used to around here with highs in the low 80s today.

It was a perfect day to head west and see what this Lickinghole Creek Brewery was all about. Most of Richmond has been and we wanted to see if it would hold up to all the Instagram posts about how fabulous it was.

Lickinghole is a brewery around 45 minutes away in Goochland that is on a gorgeous piece of land surrounded by all you can pick sunflower fields. The weather was perfect for it; they had food trucks, a live band playing, and all the beer you could ever want.

This was probably the darkest beer that I've ever drank besides the single Guinness that I drank in Ireland, a Mango Habanero Brown Ale. Probably not something I would order regularly but I know I made my IPA loving father proud.

Featuring spillage.

A lot of people brought blankets and chairs along with a picnic, perfect place for it.

It was definitely worth the trip out there and somewhere I would definitely go back next year.

Great Sunday with some of my favorite girls!!

Life: September Edition

Happy Tuesday!!

Things have been pretty slow pace around here the past few days and it has been amazing to say the least, more on this later!

4 months after graduation and I'm finally starting to settle in around here. While I grew up in Richmond my entire life there is something different about it no longer living in the West End. I love RVA, always have and I'm really happy that I made the decision to stay.

I sporadically decided to head over to Libby Hill Park last week and picked up one of my faves, Katie along the way. We made it just in time for sunset and I had forgotten what an amazing view of Richmond this little place has, a treasure for sure.

I headed to Farmville last week for a quick 18 hour trip. My gosh do I miss that place. I would be lying if I said that I didn't feel like I was going back to school on my drive there. It was oh so good to see my people; we stayed up way too late, ate too much, laughed too hard, and my heart is so very full.

I stayed with Ash, my roommate from school and it reminded me how lucky I am to have such amazing people in my life. My favorite friends are the ones where you can go 8 weeks without seeing them but pick up right where you left it. It reminded me how much I miss living her but I'm so jealous of the amazing senior year she has ahead. Thanks for having me Truluck!

A trip to Farmville wouldn't be complete without a trip to Patron. I'm missed my people.

This trip also meant getting up at 6:00 a.m. to head back to Richmond to get to work by 8 o'clock, hard but very worth it. I've seen many Farmville sunsets, they will forever have a place in my heart but I have to say I hope this is my first and last sunrise.

Thursday after work Izzy and I packed up to head to Virginia Beach for LD Weekend. The weather was supposed to be nice when we planned this trip, obviously the weather changed but we decided to stick with it anyways.

The majority of our weekend was spent doing activities such as below. I did not complain.

We headed down to the oceanfront one night after dinner once the storm had started to move out. The water was still pretty rough and the winds were super strong. Still a pretty view on a crappy day.

Izzy's neighbor/family friends recently brought a new pup home, Watson and he is absolutely adorable and makes me want one so bad.

If you know me you know that I am a sucker for a puppy. I can't help myself and I have a past with those adoption centers that they set up outside of malls/Barnes and Nobles, they target people like me.

I sent this picture to my Dad, "Meet the newest Johnston". He didn't find it funny.

 Breakfast, how I love you.

We went to Uncle Sam's which is an amazing hole in the wall breakfast spot near the oceanfront on Monday morning.

The pancakes are literally the best I have ever had and I might have dreamed about them this morning as I ate my yogurt and toast.

I stopped by Poppie's house on the way home from Virginia Beach and this girl came back home this weekend.

It is so quiet around the house when she is gone.

I signed up for the Blue Apron bandwagon.

I'm embarrassed to say that these were all delivered last week and I just got around to making the first one tonight.

I would give tonight's meal a 6.5/10. Nothing special but it was nice to have everything already together and picked out. Will report back once I make the others.

Now that Labor Day is behind us I am in full on Fall 2016 mode.

I adore Fall, it is my favorite time of the year and it always goes by too quickly. Therefore I go into crazy fall mode and purchase eveything that they make in a pumpkin variety.

I headed to Target tonight to pick up some cough drops for my lingereing cold/allergies and I came home with these.

I'm happy to report that they are amazing.
